Captain Responsibilities

 What is a Team?

A team is a Group of 10 or more participants who register under a common team name.  Any company, family, group of friends, club, community organization, school, or faith group can form  a team.  [Team Captain Key Points to Remember]

Team captains recruit team members for your team, encourage team participation and fundraising, and organize events for your team.  You help your team members have the tools they need to recruit more team members, as well as raise their own donations.  If this is your first time being a team captain here are a few pointers to get you started:  [Team Captain Responsibilities]

 1. Register your team (even if team members register using paper forms, register you team name online).

2.  Register yourself as a team member.        [Register Here]  [Information on How to Register]

3. Recruit a team of at least 10 participants made up of your fellow employees, family members and/or friends.  The more the merrier!. [Sample Emails]
NOTE:   Deadline to add people to your team – VERY IMPORTANT – Online – Monday, September 27, 2010.  Paper form – postmarked by September 22, 2010.

4. Encourage each team member to raise a minimum of $250, but they do not have to stop there.  Some individuals have raised over $1,000!  Remember, every $75 could be another free mammogram for a woman in need.     [Fundraising Tips]   [Fundraising Ideas]

5. Verify paper registration forms — it any — are complete, signed, and accompanied by accurate fees.

6.  Collect and turn in (one time and all together) team members’ paper registration materials.

7. Each team captain is responsible for picking up their teams Race for the Cure t-shirts and packets at Colonial Brookwood Village October 4 – 8, 2010.  It is the team captain’s responsibility to assemble the participant packets (including t-shirt) and get them to their team members. All items will be boxed for your convenience.  Race Sponsor Teams and Teams with over 50 members have the option of having their boxes delivered to the team captain.  [Key Dates to Remember]

8.  Coach and motivate team members for success.  Once your team members are registered, hold a Rally in your conference room or living room to help generate excitement and educate them on their responsibilities (i.e. asking for donations, recruiting more participants) Have your team members provide you with weekly reports on their progress.   Communicate information about the Race to you team – Keep them motivated!  [Download Team Tracking Sheet]

9.  Don’t forget to solicit for donations for yourself.  As the team captain, you should set the tone.  Besides your own family and friends, you should also contact your company vendors to support you and your team.

10. For those not able or willing to donate online, you may collect checks made payable to Komen Race for the Cure.  A donation log form is available for download [Click Here].  Cash and checks are considered offline donations and will be entered on the web site through a team member’s participant center by the registration and donation committee. Please allow at least 1 week for donations to post after mailing. Note: it’s very important to keep track of all donations you receive.

11.   Be ORGANIZED.  Use a folder or binder to keep everything regarding the race.   [Team Captain Tool Kit]

12.  Take full advantage of the features available on your team’s webpage.  For example, money donated online is money that you do not have to keep track of.   [Login Page]

11.  Don’t forget to enter your Team’s T-shirt into the Team T-shirt contest – [Click here] for more information.  New Rules for 2010 Team T-Shirt Contest.

12. Collect all of your team’s donations and turn them in to the Komen office by September 29 for award purposes.  Donations for the Race will be gladly accepted after the 29th, but will not be credited towards your final team tally for awards.

13.  New for 2010 a Fundraising Reward Program.  [More Information] on Fundraising Reward Program.  Visit Reward Program web pages to find an item you might like to earn.  (Note: Fundraising Prize Certificates will be mailed or emailed to you after the race)
