Susan G. Komen for the Cureis proof that one person can make a difference. It started in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died at the age of 36. Before she died of breast cancer, Suzy made Nancy promise she would do something to help other women who battled this disease. With a shoebox full of names and $200, Nancy did not know what exactly she would do. She knew it would take money to educate women and find a cure for the disease. In 1983, in her hometown of Dallas, TX, she started the first Race for the Cure and the rest is history.
RIGHT NOW: Susan G. Komen for the Cure is a global leader in the fight against breast cancer and is the world’s largest private founder of breast cancer research and community outreach programs. Twenty seven years have passed since Nancy promised Susan she would help other women who were battling breast cancer, and now our Mission has become our Promise:
A Promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find a cure.
Working through a network of affiliates and events like Race for the Cure, corporate partners and generous sponsors, Susan G. Komen for the Cure has raised $1 billion dollars for the fight against breast cancer.
